Artwork for an exhibit by arab artists that opened up yesterday in Montreal. For more details, view my journal. Here is the text that accompanies the piece at the exhibit.
Piece Study
From the base up. A symbol of the fusion of cultures wich is at the heart of the arab identity : A bedouin, nomadic nature, heading towards a city, symbol of the sedentary peoples. In the forefront, the departure point of the bedouin : The stones wich he praises as symbols of the material world that surounds us, of the eternal forces of nature.
Herein, used as a Leit Motiv, these stones appear in the composition of the solar system crowning the work : From the infinitely small to the infinitely big. The spirit of a culture which is focused on ascension and pushing farther the barriers of knowledge.
By looking beyond the horizon, illustrations of three facets reflect this focus in arab culture.
First, the material ascension of mankind, the development of sciences, more precisely the field of mathematics, producing the a marvel of navigation : The astrolab. A true representation of both the scientifical prowess and the exploring nature of the arabs.
Second, the mind's application to the conquering of the self. A portrait of Khalil Gibran, the quil, as symbol of the legacy of words and his speech, as light on the city: A symbol of our culture's spiritual wealth - both religious and philosophical.
Finally, a look at the arabs as a people, a warm people : Art, celebration, emotions and passions. Thus, the oud with the muse pourring in the voice of a people, its music, its song and its dance.
General composition
Vertical layout of the piece : Ascension of the mind and spirit on different planes, in parrallel to the horizontal temporal ascension of History.
References to both arabic caligraphy and architecture in the borders. Incorporation of the artist's style through a comic book composition and drawing style. Arab culture in modernity : Use of new medias.
Shadi, this is incredible - magnificent job and well worth the wait.
No I will go on,
We need images like this right now - we need to be reminded of the huge influence of Arab culture, science and art on what we call modern civilisation - this is important, timely and beautifully done - I want a big one.
I wanted to do something positive and talk about the influence of arab culture through to modern society... I'd be happy to make prints available, but I've gotten even less views than usual... so I think I'd be opening a prints account in vain...
how rude of me... i +fav'ed and never commented! my apologies. suffice to say, this is a beautiful image and, from what i can tell, somewhat of a departure from your styles displayed here on dA. i would like to reall encourage you to do more of this type of work, it has a real character and flavor that is at once contemporary and yet still very 'traditional'. i dont claim to know a lot about arabic/islamic art but i do know a little and i would love to see some calligraphy come from you to!
good work, be proud!
peace

You have only four comments and one of them is yours - yes.
But each of those three people have faved this magnificent statement - think about that.
You said it yourself, this is a site for teen pr0n fans for the most part. They are young, they are ignorant and they have been very successfully brainwashed right now to believe various insanities.
Arab=terrorist is a current favourite delusion.
You and I and roguescholar and xam know that this is shit and madness and it WILL pass.
I've shown your expo peice to various people that I know (over 15 years ) and everyone has been touched and moved by your work. Don't forget DA isn't the world and neither is America.
Wah! This is really brilliant. Love the colouring and layout, so thoughtful and indepth. Something about the way religion inspires art, even believes that I have no concept of, is really a beautiful thing. Thanks for teaching me a little bit about arabic culture today.
